To our community, visitors, and friends,
Happy Pride! I use this term throughout the year but especially in the months leading up to our “Annual” PrideFest in May each year. I put “Annual” in quotes because 2020 threw us and everyone else for a loop and we were not able to have our Annual PrideFest in the traditional fashion.
We have many reasons to celebrate Pride and continue looking to the future. We also have many reasons to continue the Pride movement for groups of people in our communities such as transgender individuals and People of Color (POC) that need the equality they deserve. We formed an Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism (IDEAA) committee to start working on ways we can work to create more equality.
2021 will be different again in the way that we celebrate Pride. The NHC Board of Directors has made the tough decision to cancel our in-person Pride Parade and Pride Fair for 2021. We know that this is sad news for many people to hear and it was equally sad for us to make this decision, but we do not want to increase the spread of COVID-19 in an unsafe environment or event. I encourage EVERY person and business to get out your Pride flags, rainbow materials, and Pride items in the month of May to paint our town’s rainbow and celebrate our “Annual” Pride.
NHC will be organizing 15+ safe Pride-themed events ranging from the Annual Cocktail Contest to drag shows to a Pride bike ride to a Pride book club. We want to celebrate with all of you safely and still bring LGBTQ+ visitors into our community.
2020 was challenging and 2021 will get better, but we need to remain vigilant in our fight against COVID-19 to help protect our loved ones, family, friends, and community. I hope to see each of you at our safe events in May and I hope to give you an elbow bump instead of a hug.
